Main & Emergency Switchboard Systems

The main switchboard is where all the vessel's power converges — and with it, thirty years of maintenance decisions. It is also the most dangerous place for improvised work.

We build new boards, upgrade existing ones and repair after failure, with attention to what usually gets ignored: interlocks, metering and honest documentation.

Scope of work

  • Build of new main, emergency and group starter panels
  • ACB/MCCB replacement and servicing, mechanism and operation checks
  • Verification and restoration of mechanical and electrical interlocks
  • Protection settings and coordination study
  • Metering and logging: multi-instruments, transducers, insulation monitoring
  • Shore connection panels, ATS and tie-breaker automation
  • Thermographic survey and torque-controlled tightening of connections
  • Cleaning, insulation restoration and corrosion protection

Typical symptoms & failures

  • A breaker that will not close or charge, or needs repeated attempts
  • An interlock bypassed because it 'got in the way'
  • Hot busbars, discoloured connections, the smell of overheating
  • Insulation monitoring permanently in fault, or switched off
  • Instruments reading wrong, or not reading at all
  • A switchboard with no current single-line diagram

What you receive

  • Switchboard condition report with thermography and photographs
  • Breaker and interlock test protocol
  • Protection settings table and coordination study where required
  • Updated single-line diagram

Equipment & protocols

  • ACB/MCCB and protection relays from the major manufacturers
  • Digital multi-instruments and insulation monitoring systems
  • Thermal camera, micro-ohmmeter, primary/secondary injection test sets
  • Materials and practice to IEC 60092 and class requirements

Frequently asked questions

Can main-switchboard work be done without a blackout?

Partly. Many tasks are done section by section with load transferred; anything on the busbars needs a planned shutdown.

How often is a thermographic survey needed?

Annually as a minimum, and always under load — an unloaded board shows nothing to a thermal camera.

Do you build switchboards or only repair them?

Both. New boards are built to the study and the class requirements of the specific vessel.
