Electrical Retrofit & Modernization

Most vessels do not need a new engine room. They need to stop being held up because a 1998 unit is no longer on any shelf in the world.

Our approach to retrofit is deliberately conservative: keep what is sound — cabling, CT/VT, breakers, enclosures — and replace, precisely, what is obsolete or unreliable. Less downtime, less cost, fewer new risks.

Scope of work

  • Technical survey of the existing installation and condition assessment
  • Upgrade proposal that states plainly what stays, what is replaced and what is removed
  • Replacement of obsolete controllers, relays and instruments with current equivalents
  • Modernised generator control and PMS without replacing the switchboard
  • AMS and engine-room screen upgrades
  • Migration from analogue instruments to digital metering and logging
  • Replacement of ageing inverter / VFD drives and starters on cargo pump fans, thrusters and pumps
  • Reconstruction of documentation: single-line, control drawings, I/O lists

Frequently asked questions

Does the whole switchboard have to be replaced?

Rarely. In most cases the enclosure, busbars and breakers are sound; what has become obsolete is the control and metering.

Can a retrofit be done without drydocking?

Many control upgrades are done in port stays, in phases. Anything requiring a main-switchboard shutdown is planned around docking.

What if there are no drawings?

We produce them. Surveying the existing wiring is part of the job, and is often the most useful deliverable of the project.
